OEA NS Society offers two categories of training to meet employer’s needs; Core and Core Plus.
Core Training Programs are focused at a level that provides employers with all of the basics, need to know and some very helpful tips and processes to assist you to navigate the system. Core programs are developed around the system goals of WCB and OHS to help you with understanding your responsibilities, return to work, disability case management, submission preparation, safety officer orders, JOHSC's and more!
Some Core Training Programs have a $50 fee for employers and employer business groups. However, If this fee is prohibitive or an issue preventing your attendance, please contact our office directly.
Core Plus Training Programs are designed to meet specific needs of employers but at a more detailed or advanced level. Core Plus programming is outside our funding contract with WCB and we do charge for Core Plus programs.
All of our day-long programs include your lunch. All programs provide each participant with a folder of useful information and a copy of the power point slides that were used in the training to ensure you have materials to go back and review whenever you need to.

Navigating Nova Scotia Employment Legislation.
This three and half hour course provides participants with a broad overview and review to assist navigation with provincial occupational health and safety, worker’s compensation and the intersections of other employment legislation that needs consideration. Related subjects of Duty to Accommodate, return to work planning are covered. Please also see programs offered: "Navigating Workers' Compensation" and "Navigating Occupational Health and Safety". This program can be offered for workplace groups at the employer's workplace as well. Call for details or to schedule.

WCB’S “My Account “and How to Use It.
This two hour course provides hands on explanation in how to register for MyAccount. This course is done in partnership with staff from the Assessments Dept. of WCB NS.

This three and a half hour course specific to Physio Therapy Clinic Owners and Managers, assists you to navigate the obligations under the Workers Compensation legislation, review the rights, roles and responsibilities of the workplace parties, and understand specific policies, forms, types of benefits paid and reporting requirements.

Navigating Occupational Health & Safety.
This three hour course assists you to navigate the obligations under the OHS legislation, review the rights, roles and responsibilities of the workplace parties, and look at specific policies, duties, forms and requirements. This program has been developed by OEA NS Society staff and is focussed specifically on the needs of employers. This program can be offered on site at an employer's workplace. Call for details or to schedule.

WCAT Appeal Preparation for Employers (2- Part)
Part 1: Basic introduction to Appeals (Pre-requisite for Part 2)
Part 2: Mock Hearing/ Conference Call
These 2 separate full-day courses provide all of the important planning and preparation steps for an oral hearing in the WCB/WCAT appeal process. Proven practical approaches and insight and useful information to assist employers to participate more confidently and expertly in appeals involving their company. Participants will have many opportunities to be involved in discussion and ask questions. The session includes a mock conference call and oral hearing. This program is done is partnership with Workers' Compensation Board of Nova Scotia, Workers' Compensation Appeals Tribunal and invited guest speakers.

Disability Case Management (2-Part)
Part 1: Introduction/ Theory (A Pre-requsite for Part 2)
Part 2: Putting Everything into Practice - the Application Phase
These 2 separate full-day courses provide practical and useful information to assist in implementing disability case management in the workplace and to do it more confidently and expertly. All aspects of disability case management, best practices and alignment with legislative requirements are reviewed and discussed. Numerous examples and specific cases reviewed. The roles and responsibilities of all workplace parties are discussed and how to address specific issues of non-compliance are covered.
Course Fee: $299.00/day
Letter and Submission Writing for Employers
This full day course provides participants with a solid understanding of writing for the intended audience using collected and file evidence, application of legislation, workplace principles and practices and the literature. A review of some WCB policies and their importance in letter and submission writing is discussed. Although focussed around case management and discipline matters, this course has wide application for hiring, job transfers, performance related issues and general health and disability issues.

Appropriate Implementation of Discipline of Workers During an Open WCB Claim or OHS Complaint
This four hour course will identify and guide you in the disciplinary processes, while taking into consideration rights and obligations under workers’ compensation and occupational health and safety to ensure that any application of discipline is done appropriately, fairly and in alignment with the legislation.

Managing Mental Health Disability and Return to Work
This two hour course will provide practical advice and critical insight into mental health issues in the workplace and return to work challenges. How to support appropriate accommodation strategies, the fundamentals of mental health disability management and accessing relevant information from the treating physician or psychologist are reviewed and explored.

Understanding and Assessing Job Demands Analysis and Application in the workplace
This three and a half hour course will take an in-depth review of the inter-relationship between JDA’s (Job Demands Assessments), functional assessments, physiotherapy and medical reports, wording used in these different types of reports and the many applications of JDA’s in employment and case management. Suggestions for improving your JDA’s and how to hire the right practitioner to create one for your workplace are all discussed.
This program is taught in partnership with Cornerstone Occupational Therapy Consultants.
